Quarterfinal Curiosities – WTCOC week 7

This week’s Curiosities are short and sweet because we are also preparing the Curiosities for the entire 2024 season.

  • Japan, Hungary, France and the United Kingdom all won their matches this week and will proceed to the semifinals!
  • from the 3 time WTCOC winner Japan, the other teams (Fra, UK, Hun) are in the semi finals for the first time in their history.
  • 48 games played (20 duels)
    • 12 duels had 2 games (24 games total)
    • 8 duels had 3 games (24 games total)
  • Player 1-3 (Fra) earned this week’s highest game score of 141 points (which is only 3 points behind the highest score so far this year) and shares this week’s highest combined score with phoam (Por).
  • UK’s wallaceprime scored 74 points to claim this week’s lowest winning score.
  • LazyBore (UK) and HotlyHotly ended a game with a 100-100 draw, and the win was given to the UK. However…this game should have been recorded as a loss due to time instead. Ooops!
  • We are very happy to report that for the first time this year, all games were completed as ‘expected’: Nobody failed to show up for their duel and nobody inappropriately conceded a game, as players should only concede games if they run out of time.
  • After the Round of 16, Alexey_LV was the only player to have won 6 duels. During the quarterfinals, HotlyHotly and szigfrid also claimed their 6th victories.
  • Alexey_LV and should (Jap) are the only players to have played at least 5 duels without any losses. It is possible, however, for should to surpass Alexey_LV’s streak if he plays and wins two more duels.
  • Statmatt is the only former individual world champion member of a team participating in the quarterfinals, but he didn’t play this week!

Weekly Feature Records:

  • evereverever (UK) scored a 12 point road at table #520237304 on turn 74
  • Glovir (Port) scored a 48 point city at table #520422549 on turn 136. That’s only 4 points short of this year’s record!
  • ohlookcake scored a 30 point field at table #520252863
  • hydrobaby scored 35 monastery points at table #520240114 (3 complete and 1 incomplete monasteries)

Just to be clear, it was Hotly Hotly who went under 0 seconds so the UK win was the correct result. It was just that the reason should have been time rather than me being the second player and therefore ‘winning’ the tie.

        • Thanks for your interest in the Curiosities! There is a new article, and it is almost done. I was over-ambitious about what I could complete within a reasonable time-frame, as I’m still learning how to do some of this stuff as I go, but hopefully the wait will be worth it.

Although we didn’t chose an MVP (I think Carcassonne.Cat did that last year?), there will be lists of players with the highest % of games/matches won during the group stage and also for the entire tournament. And I think the question of which match was the best would be a great question to open up to the public!!

Some of the new information in this soon-to-be published edition of the Curiosities: think-time stats, meeple placement stats, and which tiles were the most useful (on average) during WTCOC ’24.

So, any guesses about what the “most useful tile of WTCOC ’24” was? 😉
